It seems as though noone in Hollywood has an original idea (except for Charlie Kaufman! That guys ideas are AWESOME!) so we keep seeing remakes. In certain aspects, it really stinks that we’ve gotta see movies that are being “redone” and have the possibility of being forever tainted by someone trying to put a hip, cool look on a classic.
The Amityville Horror is a remake that looks pretty interesting to me though. I was surfing around yesterday and went to Dave’s Trailer Page and d/l’ed the trailer for the new Amityville Horror film. Starring Ryan Reynolds (I like that guy, especially after Blade: Trinity), I think it looks like it just may be a pretty scary show. Check out the Hi-Res trailer to the NEW one at the following link (be advised it’s a DIRECT link so if you’re on hi-speed internet you can just right click and “Save As” instead of left-clicking)
Mmmm, hmmm…..Creepy, huh?
Well, supposedly the Amityville Horror is based on a true story of a horrible crime taking place in a house and how The Lutz’s buy the house AFTER the crime has been cleaned up. There is evil in the house and ends up chasing the Lutz family out after 28 days.
I’ve gotta be honest here, I remembered it being a hell of a lot scarier when I saw it originally about 10 years ago….Don’t get me wrong, it’s not BAD at all but it IS slow and the scares are hit and miss. A few pretty terrifying scenes (Rod Steiger’s attempts to bless the house being thwarted by unseen malevolent forces? Yeah, that one is a bit creepy) are somewhat cheapened with the cheesier “thrills” (the two red eyes outside of the Lutz’s youngest daughters bedroom looked like a couple of maraschino cherries in a glass of Dr Pepper) but overall, a decent horror movie to watch.
I think the remake will definitely breathe some new life into this one and will probably result in more people watching the original with James Brolin and Margot Kidder.
